Melfort · Our story

Rooted in
something
personal.

Before there was a restaurant, there was a family farm, a generous table and a way of caring for people that stayed with us.

Details that make Melfort feel like home.

01 · Where it began

A family farm.
A lasting feeling.

Melfort was the name of Tasmin’s family farm in Zimbabwe’s Mazowe Valley. There were fruit trees, vegetable gardens, livestock and a table with room for whoever arrived hungry. Her grandfather ran a butchery and a school on the property, too. Family, work and the life of the land were closely woven together.

Meals followed what was growing. Ingredients were prepared simply, food was shared generously, and looking after people was part of everyday life. Those are the memories behind our name.

Our restaurant stands on different soil, at Marianne Wine Estate in Stellenbosch, but we carry that feeling with us: a connection to the land, pleasure in a good meal and the quiet comfort of being welcomed.

02 · Tasmin’s journey

A return to
nourishment.

When Tasmin was diagnosed with IgA nephropathy, a kidney disease, her relationship with food changed. She began looking more closely at where ingredients came from, how they were grown and how the way she ate connected with the way she felt.

That attention brought her back to the food she had grown up with: whole ingredients, seasonal abundance and thoughtful preparation. It deepened her interest in food that could be both deeply delicious and carefully considered.

You can see that care in our kitchen today. Vegetables are given their moment, broths are allowed their time, and fermentation and preservation help us carry one season into the next. Tasmin’s experience sits quietly behind those choices, shaping a way of cooking that feels personal, generous and close to the land.

03 · Making you feel at home

Good food.
A genuine welcome.

Tasmin leads the kitchen, with fire, fermentation and the changing seasons at the heart of her cooking. Nick looks after the experience around the table: the first welcome, a thoughtful wine suggestion and the small details that help you settle in.

Together, we want Melfort to feel like a pause from the rush outside. Somewhere to share a meal, enjoy good company and leave feeling looked after.

04 · Our roots in Zimbabwe

Melfort,
still growing.

Back in Zimbabwe, another chapter of the Melfort story is growing. Rock of Wisdom School opened in September 2025, with help from Julia Hopper and the team supporting Pastor Junior Gwenhe.

Julia regularly shares news with us, keeping us connected to the school and the children’s progress. It means a great deal to see learning, farming and practical skills coming together there, with a new generation putting down roots of their own.
